Conference Presentation: I just got back from Reproduced Sound 2025 in Harrogate, the annual conference on electroacoustics and related disciplines, organised by the Institute of Acoustics. Some very interesting talks, on a wide range of subjects, in a friendly atmosphere.
I presented the paper: 'Achieving wide dispersion in single-box stereo speaker systems'. Thanks to the IOA for organization, and everyone for the comments and conversations. Looking forward to next year.
New patent approved: Soundbar research and investigations have led to the 2023 patent: 'WO2023284963A1 AUDIO DEVICE AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING A SOUND FIELD USING BEAMFORMING' - improving the effectiveness of quasi-surround side and rear channels.
Beamforming is used to radiate the side (or rear) channel signal towards the side wall of the listening room – whereupon it is reflected back inwards towards the listener – giving the impression of having come from the side. A novel direct-field cancellation technique allows a 20dB level difference between the side-wall reflected component and the component that arrives directly from the soundbar – thus greatly improving the effectiveness of this method.
